Ancestry.Com Delivered Some Surprises
I am only 2% Irish and somehow super duper Scottish! #yayunicorns
But first, announcements! You can now pre-order the eBook version of WHY (for Kindle or the free Kindle app on Apple devices). Pre-orders for the paperback and hardcover versions will be posted in the next week or two. I also have Author profiles on both Goodreads and Amazon. The Amazon profile is having an issue in the queue for help. More information will be added soon. But it is mine, and this will be the main point of reference for all book versions when they are available. So exciting! Now, to the post…
Throughout our lives, my brother and I have often been asked if we are Hispanic. I take that as a compliment, but I have always wondered why people ask us that. Also, back in the days when photography was first invented, you know, where people had to sit still and not smile for three weeks for photo exposure to work, we have a yellowed-with-age photo of my great-great-grandmother. I have no idea where it ended up (probably with Great Aunt Irene). But, from what I can remember, her beautiful features look Native American or Hispanic, possibly black.
My family always raised me to believe I was predominantly Irish, Welsh, and with a dash of Native American, Cherokee. I could see where my great-grandmother might be Native American, but I was curious to know if she was Hispanic or Black.
I have always wanted to do the DNA test out of curiosity and to honor her heritage and origins if they were not Welsh, Irish, or Native American.
So, I got my results back in the graphic above, and I have zero genes representing people of color. Like, none at all.
I find that disappointing. I still find my great-great-grandmother intriguing, even more so now.
However, what I think is awesome is that I am exceedingly Scottish! So now my inlaws can’t pick on the Irishman marrying into the Scottish tribe anymore and how my ancestors are rolling in their graves. Well, I mean, 2% of them might be :).
Of course, I am Scottish; Scotland's national animal is a unicorn! I also love entertaining, am passionate, love wearing kilts (air conditioning), and have a sardonic wit! I am also descended from the McQuarrie (McCrary) clan on my Mother’s side. I'm not sure where the Scottish comes in on my Biological Dad’s side. Both of my parents were predominantly Scottish (according to my DNA), and both contributed different Scottish genes to me, which is wild to think of. The tartan in the graphic is the tartan for the McQuarrie Clan.
Fun fact: the main artist for the original Star Wars trilogy, ET, Cocoon, and the first Battlestar Galactica series was a McQuarrie: Ralph McQuarrie.
So, my genetic disposition to be a fantasy, sci-fi, artist, and nerd comes naturally. :) All of that thrills me.
However, my test also said I was an Introvert (true, but an extroverted introvert), have a sweet tooth (very true), a night person (very true), and extremely not a risk taker (extremely true).
Such a weird test. I am glad I did it, but it has caused more questions than answers. I am sure many people who do this find that to be true.
